A Short history of Richmond, Illinois
Richmond, Illinois, is a very small and quaint town on the border of Illinois and Wisconsin. Its population is now about 1,500 but new housing developments will quadrouple the number of homes within the next 10 years. It is called "The Village of Yesteryear" because it boasts many Victorian style homes and an interesting array of antique shops.William A. McConnell is credited with the founding of the village of Richmond...

NFL QB Controversies - Who Will Keep Their Job?
There is nothing more potentially distracting to an NFL team than a quarterback controversy. When a starter has his job threatened by a precocious backup, or loses it altogether, it can divide the team and hurt a whining millionaire's feelings. Ask Trent Green or Rob Johnson if they are sending Christmas cards to Kurt Warner or Doug Flutie. The quarterbacking is so inconsistent in the league these days that half of the teams have real problems heading into the season, and that's being generous. Beyond the handful of star-caliber players, any quarterback could be a starter in September and unemployed at Thanksgiving. Here's a look at eight teams with the most tenuous starters, and my odds that the...
Thanks for the Memories Coach Alvarez
As someone who never cared much about college football growing up, when Barry Alvarez was hired to coach my state's largest (only) Division I football program in 1990, I was only mildly interested. After 116 victories, and 3 Rose Bowl victories, I am now a convert: I love Badgers football! As of yesterday, things will be different at UW-Madison: Head Coach Barry Alvarez coached his las college football game at Camp Randall stadium. Sure there is 1 more game, at Hawaii, and 1 more bowl game to play and win. And yes, Coach Alvarez is thankfully staying on as athletic director to help recruit and run our programs to ensure we stay top notch in all we do, but things will be different, that's for sure.I...
Alternatives In Mental Health
"Health" and "illness" are contrasting terms. They can be used in physical or in mental context. We know that physical exercise done on a regular basis keeps us healthy. Mental exercise also keeps us mentally healthy. Just like after doing physical exercise we need rest, after mental exercise the mind also needs rest. But we hear the term "physical rest" frequently. The term "mental rest" is rarely used. No doubt then that as mental activities have increased with industrialisation, stress has increased. This stress results from our inability to allow our mind to become inactive or relaxed for even a short time. Some people believe that our brain becomes inactive when we sleep. If that were...
Doc's 2005 WAC Preview -- Conference Will Get...
Be prepared to hear quite a bit about the Western Athletic Conference this year. Just as Utah made a commanding run into the BCS Top Five last season out of the lowly Mountain West, the WAC features a pair of clubs that could do some serious damage to the bowl hopes of schools in the major conferences.According to the USA Today preseason poll, the WAC is home to two of the top 26 teams in the country. Boise State is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation, and Fresno State is No. 26. Fresno State is a mere four points out of the Top 25 (188 pts. to Pittsburgh's 192 pts.). Not too shabby.Boise State has a chance to make its presence felt on the national scene early on this fall. The Broncos travel to...
St. Paul: Executed [Poetic Prose]
My name is Dennis L. Siluk, and I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, where my father never found the time to spend time with anyone I know of. I learned kindness from my mother, not sure where she got it from. I shall return only in memory to dead St. Paul, by the Mighty Mississippi, so it is called; where I wish not to be buried, since I had run off to a world of adventure, a life-time ago, beyond the clouds of St. Paul, the clean and empty cart that holds the roots, and the scavengers of the Mississippi--so delicately...

Potty Training Secrets: How To Make It...
Diapers costing you a fortune? It may be time to tackle one of the most important challenges in your young child's life... the dreaded potty training experience. One of the most common questions that I am asked is in regards to subject. Many parents will ask me something like this:"Do you have any tips on potty training a two year old, that has no desire to try?"I have been very lucky in my own four children that they potty trained literally on their own, but I have had several daycare kids that were not as interested in this phase of their little lives.First of all I know that everyone says not to push them, but it is very true. DO NOT try and force the issue. As a parent we must learn to...
Sports Halls of Fame
To any sports fan, a hall of fame is the quintessential celebration of a sport and tribute to the athletes who participate in that sport. Many a sports fan will make pilgrimages to the hall of fame of their favorite sport to "soak up" the history and traditions of that sport. In North America there are over thirty halls of fame to various sports and sporting events. As one would expect, these include halls dedicated to the major sports such as baseball, basketball, hockey, and football (here "major" refers to those sports that attract the largest fan base in North America). Also included in this number are halls that pay tribute to sports such as bowling, cycling, fishing, gymnastics, lacrosse, motor...
The Remarkable Antioxidant Power of Cranberries...
With the holiday season just around the corner, cranberries will start to make their yearly appearance in Thanksgiving and other seasonal meals. Their tangy flavor and bright red color make them a favorite this time of year (it's also when they're most plentiful, as their peak season runs from October to December). But flavor and color aside, there's another reason to enjoy cranberries (and even make them part of your diet year-round)--they're incredibly nutritious and great for your health. Cranberries and Your Heart Studies have found that cranberries reduce the risk of heart disease. Most recently, a study...

Harley Davidson. The name means motorcycles. In business for over a hundred years, the company is universally acknowledged as the manufacturer of some of the world's finest motorcycles, and justly so.Beginning in the mind of William Harley and the backyard of his friend, Arthur Davidson, the pair created a 'motorized bicycle' that has evolved into the standard for fine two-wheeled transportation.Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, their first bike didn't even have enough power to make it up the small hills of the town without pedal assistance. The pair were undaunted. Within a few years they were producing vehicles for the military fighting WWI and it's been the standard for military and police bikes...

Timing Is Everything - Part 3
In this series of articles we're examining the TIMING of fitness. We've already looked at WHEN to eat for minimum fat storage, and also WHEN to exercise for maximum fat loss. The previous article was about morning exercise. Besides the benefits of burning more fat, morning exercise has several other beneficial effects:+ Shifts our biological clock to kick-start key physiological systems long before we wake up. This enhances most bodily functions throughout the day.+ Increases mental acuity. Exercise causes a release of endorphins and insulin-like growth factor I(IGF-I) that increases both mental alertness and acuity. True, this benefit is apparent at any time of day we decide to exercise, but early...

Whatever Happened to Simplicity?
Those of us who are in classic car clubs, regardless of model or make, decide to become members for any given number of reasons. Perhaps we owned a particular car in our youth that brings back fond memories of cruising the streets on Friday nights. Maybe we remember going to Drive-in movies with our date's head resting on our shoulder. Perhaps it was simply the sound of our particular car's engine, which could range from anything to a soft purr or a horsepower-laden monsterous growl as we rolled down the highway. Perhaps some of us are too young to have experienced the era in which these cars roamed the earth, but we have nevertheless been influenced by our elders and appreciate what once was...
How Long Will My Digital Prints Last?
The question in the title of this article would be much easier to answer if you took the word "digital" out of it. Color photographic printing has been relatively unchanged since its debut, and you can expect those prints to last up to 100 years if stored properly. [And by properly, I mean away from light in a consistently cool environment without extreme highs or lows in humidity levels.]But anyone who hasn't been living in a cave the last five years knows that digital photography is rapidly taking over traditional film processes. It's time to ask some tough questions about what that means for the lifespan of your treasured family photographs.Manufacturer's claims. You're shopping in...

If you have been doing project management for a while, your confidence has probably gotten an occasional shaking. And the resulting lack of confidence hurts you, but it also hurts your team members who need you to be confident and not self-conscious. You're their leader after all, and they want you to have a strong plan, vision, self-esteem and the confidence to lead.Obsessing over our personal and organizational shortcomings traps us. We may think it is for our own good - to help us truly learn from our past mistakes. But it can spiral downward into embarrassment and shame. And if you find this happening to you, the best advice is to turn it around early. Take the lessons learned with you, but shed...
With the many different brands and models on the market, buying a laptop or notebook computer may at first seem confusing. Don't Be a Worry Wort!
Everyone worries. As bothersome as it is, worry isn't all bad, and can actually work for you. Worry can give you a jolt of energy, spark your creative thinking, and help you to meet deadlines. The trick is to keep worry under control and these tips will help you do that.1. Identify the source. Though it can take days, weeks, or even months, identifying the source of your worry is time well spent. You may feel anxious all the time, for example, constantly looking over your shoulder, and thinking something awful is about to happen. Once you'e identified these feelings as anticipatory grief you can do something about them.2. See the big picture. Or as author Richard Carlson, PhD puts it, "Don't...

All too often, we push ourselves past the limits of mere mortals, and into the netherland of bad health. We eat wrong, we don't sleep enough, we load up on caffeine, and we don't exercise. Notice I said we; I'm guilty too. I know I need to exercise more, I know I need to eat better, and I definitely know I don't need that fourth cup of coffee. Why do we do it, and what can we do to change our behaviors?Let's start with the easiest part first, why do we do it? We push ourselves because we think that if we go just a little further, that we'll get that raise, promotion, or be able to accomplish one more thing that we really need to accomplish. Too bad this is so foolhardy. What we really need is not...

Is Pasteurization More of a Health Risk or a...
We're taught as early as elementary school about the French chemist Louis Pasteur and his famous invention: pasteurization. This is the process of heating food to kill bacteria, viruses, mold, yeasts and other potentially harmful organisms. The first pasteurization test was performed back in 1862, after Pasteur noticed that microorganisms could contaminate beverages (he later extended this to the theory that microorganisms could contaminate humans and animals as well.). But pasteurization did not immediately become the gold standard for milk production in the United States. In fact, at the end of the 19th century...
Getting Free Credit Reports Will Require Some...
Federal legislation giving consumers the right to a free credit report took effect in December, with a nationwide roll-out that began with Western states. The law requires the three national credit-tracking companies Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax to provide consumers with free credit reports once a year. Consumer advocates say that the importance of consumers monitoring their credit histories has never been greater. That was underscored last week with revelations that a security breach at ChoicePoint Inc. might have revealed to identity thieves the personal data of some 145,000 people nationwide and 830 in Wisconsin. "The government wanted to provide consumers with tools to guard against...
